Take out the laptop battery when plugged into a socket?

 Does taking out the laptop battery when plugged into the socket prolong it life or is this another wife stale that has does nothing else than just unbalance your laptop?

Although I have no scientific reference for you I do believe your theory is very sound.

By taking the battery out this prevents it from "trickle charging", which is usually the blame for decreasing battery life.  If it doesn't have access to the trickle charge it can't be affected.

Yes leaving the battery on charge for extended periods will minimise the battery life, the battery can only be charged a number of times in its life whicj is subject to the way it is used, by leaving it plugged in you are in effect using up one of its charges for a very small amount of use, and you could be doing this quite a few times in one day.

However you must not let the battery be stored flat as this is also a death sentance, a fine line must be maintained.
