How to Troubleshoot a Graphics Card Installation

In many problems with graphics card installation, the cause is a loose cable or a card that isn't making proper contact with the expansion slot. In other cases, you may not have the most current software to run the graphics card. Other problems are caused by improper system settings. No matter what is causing your graphics card troubles, you can find a solution.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

  1. Step 1
Open the case of your computer. Check the graphics card to ensure that it is securely installed in the expansion slot. Tighten the screw on the back of the graphics card to secure it to your computer's chassis.

  2. Step 2
Make sure that you have attached the monitor cable to the port on the back of the graphics card and not the on-board video port on the motherboard. Press it firmly to ensure that it is securely attached. Tighten the thumbscrews at the end of the monitor cable.

  3. Step 3
Visit the manufacturer's website to get the most recent version of your graphics card's software. Install the software if you have not done so already. If the software is not functioning properly, uninstall it. Reboot your computer and reinstall the software.

  4. Step 4
Click "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Display" to change your screen resolution if the screen is not displaying properly. Click the "Settings" tab, then adjust the slider bar to the best resolution and color depth for your monitor. Click "Apply."

  5. Step 5
Click the "Troubleshoot" button in Display Properties if you are still experiencing problems. Select the description that sounds most like the problem you are having and click "Next." Continue to answer the questions in the next screens that appear.

  6. Step 6
Click "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Performance and Maintenance" > "System." Click the "Hardware" tab. Click "Device Manager." Click the plus button beside "Display Adapters" to expand the list. See if there are any other graphics cards or video devices installed on your computer. Right-click on the device and select "Uninstall" to remove the drivers. If you can't uninstall the device, then select "Disable" from the list. Hope that helps you.
