Afraid of Pregnancy & Labor....I'm a 35 and ...

Afraid of Pregnancy & Labor....I'm a 35 and recently married, now having a child seems real to me.  I have always been afraid though of being pregnant & childbirth since I was 15.  I have seeked advice from my OB /GYN , my minister and books...now the internet .  I don't have much time to waste anymore (not getting any younger).  A lot of the time I feel anxious thinking of me being pregnant and going through delivery.  Then I tend to think of all the what if's that could happen.  And with being older, I think, too, of the risks.  But, I do have days where I feel that I can do this.  I am willing to try anything to help me overcome this fear...I want a child!!  Does anyone have any suggestions on how they overcome my fear/anxiety?

Think of this.. women have been bearing children since the beginning of time.  They used to do it without modern facilities and care.  There really is nothing to fear.  Childbirth is the most natural thing on the planet.  Most women will tell you that whatever they endured during labor they forgot as soon as they laid eyes upon their child.  You are needlessly stressing over nothing.  Think positive!

Why not allow yourself to be afraid, but proceed to try anyway?

Fear is often something we have when we are faced with the unknown. If all you know of pregnancy, labor and delivery are the horror stories you've heard (or seen), then it's only natural you'd fear the entire experience.

Look at it this way: You love your husband and you want to have a child with him. You trust your doctor to care for you properly. You trust that you have the ability to care for a child and enough love in store to embark on the journey.

So what is there to fear? Do you fear being ill during pregnancy? Many women never know a day of morning sickness throughout the whole thing.

Do you fear the pain of labor and delivery? Analgesics are available to stop you from feeling the pain. Or if you don't want to have drugs, try hypnosis (it worked for my aunt).

Do you worry that your baby could be born with birth defects or other medical problems? Find out what you can do to minimize the chances of that happening and make use of medical technology to have prenatal or natal testing, if your doctor believes it's necessary.

The bottom line is, if this is something you truly want; then go for it! Acknowledge the fear and then let it go - and check back with us in about 10 months to let us know how things went!

I'm 33 and am 8 weeks pregnant, and had to go through IVF. However, 2 years ago the thought of being pregnant really scared me, as well as labour, I hate pain! Finding out I couldn't conceive naturally made  me realize how badly I really wanted it & I found after the process if you want something really bad enough you will do whatever it takes to achieve it. The thought of labour still scares me, but just think of the prize at the end of the race, a baby in your arms that you & your husband made!

i was scared once i knew i was pregnant but i was looking forward to haveing my baby in my arms and that was all that i could think about. Is haveing that baby and no matter how much i looked forward to that joy i was always scared. But as long as you trust your doctor and you do as they say you will be doing great and there is nothing to be scared of. Be happy to have a child that you and your husband created. Cause in the end that is always the greatest gift in the world.
