Knitwise is usually used to describe the way you are to approach the stitch. Eg.: Slip stitch knitwise . .  meaning that you place the right needle through the loop on the left needle as through you were going to knit the stitch (through front of the loop left to right) and slip to right needle without knitting.  This changes the direction or orientation of the loop.
