My wife got the kids used to wearing all the leading brands, and now they whine if asked to wear anything "regular". Do you think kids should be wearing brand names, or are cheaper "no logo" clothes ...

You know, it's not branded clothing versus regular clothes that seems the problem here. Your kids WHINE when they don't get what they want. I think they should learn to be appreciative of the clothes they're wearing. AND... If for instance, someone else gives them clothes as presents, they shouldn't complain that they weren't in the style or brands they liked.
