What is a Jewelry Hallmark?

"There is a common misunderstanding about what a hallmark really is. Many people confuse hallmarks with makers' marks.

A hallmark is nothing more than an indication of metal content, a guarantee of purity or quality, which may include a maker’s mark and other marks.

Makers' marks alone are not considered hallmarks.

Hallmarks are most often found on precious metal objects. Jewelry is exempted from hallmarking under certain circumstances.

However, when a piece of jewelry is hallmarked, the marks can yield clues to country of origin and, sometimes, date of manufacture, as well as indicate the metal content of the piece."

A hallmark is merely a stamp that is meant to identify the material of which the jewellery is made of. Ie. sterling silver would have .925, 14k gold 14kt etc. and so on.

Jewelry hallmarks are the time most of the valuable objects found, although it is sometimes found that it is not always the case jewelry. Although, as a sign of gemstone jewelry in order to lend it to them is to create a piece of jewelry, and metal content of the time, even many clues.

Jewelry hallmarks basically help to identify a piece of jewelry. The hallmark is actually an official mark in the metal that shows how fine the metal is. For instance, the mark "Sterling" means that the piece of jewelry is made of sterling silver, whereas the mark "PLAT" means that it is made of platinum.
