IRS back tax help

Can you tell me anything about the companies who promise to be able to cut your back IRS taxes in half?  We owe the IRS money in back taxes.  Are these companies legetimate?  Or would we be wasting money to hire them?  Can they realy do what they say?  Even stop leins and garnishments?

Susan, there are dozens of companies out there lined up to take your money to work on your tax problem.

Many of them promise the moon, but in this area, unfortunately, there are a GREAT many hustlers who make promises they simply cannot keep.

For example, one of the highest profile companies was sued by the Attorneys General of 18 different states for failing to deliver to consumers what was promised.

The fact is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get your problem solved.

What you need is an experienced person to guide you through the process.

Our friend Dan Pilla literally "wrote the book" on tax debt forgiveness.

Dan’s book, "How to Get Tax Amnesty," has the leading book in the nation on the topic since 1992 and we recommend it highly. It gives you everything you need to know to get the job done yourself without spending a pile of money that you may not have!

You can order Dan’s book by going to www.taxhelponline.com.  It will be a LOT cheaper and much more useful to getting your situation resolved.

You would be wasting your money.  All they will do is contact the IRS to see if an agreement can be made to dissolve some of the tax liability you have.  You can do this yourself by contacting IRS and arranging a payment schedule, and save the money from the other party.

Sometimes we put up walls not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down.

These companies are out to get your money. The only one to help you with the IRS is the IRS. Contact them and explain your situation and they will help you. My nephew owed them a lot of money and they worked with him to make monthly payments that he could live with. They don't want to you to go to jail, they will work out a plan. Good luck.

I agree with UR193 and the Dolans that many of those companies are rip-offs and it is hard to know which are NOT (if any).

I also agree that you could call IRS and negotiate a pay off agreement and that the IRS is more interested in collecting the money and GENERALLY not interested in trying to put taxpayers in jail.

That said, I have on CAUTION.   If the only issue you have with IRS is: paying of a tax liability you agree you owe and if your tax returns are solid and you don't have any other potential issues, go ahead and call them.   HOWEVER, if you think there are any OTHER ISSUES (besides a payment plan) that could arise, you should not talk to them about that if it comes up, you are better to have a tax accountant of tax lawyer talk to them and defend your tax handling if the OTHER ISSUES are significant.  You do NOT want to be in a position of lying to them, as that can be an additional criminal offense aside from any offense if a false return was file (so you just get in deeper).

How about paying small processing fee to get started over resolving tax issues by expert and paying only little more when you get tax resolution letter from IRS in your mail box, with the full refund guarantee of the processing fee paid in case you do not see anything from IRS in your mail box ?
