I love my computers and my TV dearly, but I have to say it's the advances in medical technology, like the artificial heart and so on. I know that without those medical advances, I wouldn't still be here, and that's something I'm very thankful for.
Wonderful answer.
There have been numerous advances in medicine: the Nobel Prize in Medicine is the most sought after of the lot. However, the smallest things make the greatest advances.
One thing that causes disease to spread and death in developing countries is unsafe food and water. Kingsford Corporation developed a safe, durable, and inexpensive charcoal burning stove that will cook and smoke meat for long-term preservation. It will burn virtually any fuel, including dried manure. Broken pallets, wood scrap, cardboard, and paper will also burn virtually smoke free. Where there is coal, they can burn that with an included insert.
The best part is that it has a water jacket that boils water, sterilizing it. Hot water also encourages frequent bathing, which adds another dimension to the prevention of disease. If nothing else that is a noteworthy advance in the prevention of disease.
Just to have clean water to wash out lacerations and sterilize bandages makes a real difference.
A lot of heart surgery is now done robotically and the doctor views it on a monitor which would not exist without the invention of the TV. Diagnostic tools like ultrasound and CAT scans are viewed on monitors which would not exist without the invention of the TV. Clueless dolts like Brian think the TV is just to watch mindless TV shows and do not understand how many inventions exist only because the TV was invented first.
I like the work Kingsford did. Clean water and safe food make a great deal of difference to the poorest among us. The poor lack resources therefore they are most direly in need of hope.
As to robotic surgery. That would be great if you can afford it. I for one would much rather put up with a skilled physician, with razor blades and sewing thread to remove an inflamed appendix, than a robot -- that I cannot afford.
BTW, the drastic cost increases relative to Obamacare will put it out of reach for all but the extremely wealthy. Talk about counterproductive!
