I've gotten the feeling that the major car insurance companies are scamming their competitiveness by asking what company we are currently insured through and then only beating that company by a relatively small amount.

Is it necessary that I give the name of my current insurance company when I 'm going out to bid an a new policy?

Fred, You don't have to tell anyone anything. It is none of their business. When an agent asks what company you have now, just sort of blow that off and say that you are just shopping around for the best rates. Hopefully the agent will take the hint.

Usually the agent asks your present insurance company because companies share information. The agent can quickly check your present policy to see if he wants you for a client. If you have many claims with your present company, he will high ball you to make you shop somewhere else. If you have a clean record then he'll usually try quote you a competive rate.
