Hi,

As far as I know ipod are not some initials....  If I am not wrong it all started from the movie "Odyssey in Space" they have there Bay pod or EVA pods..... can't remember....  Steve Jobes wanted to use that name but didn't get the permission, so he choosed ipod.....  Please cross-check it, I don't want to give you wrong information (though I am almost sure).
Best regards,

Indeed Oron's answer is correct. The thought came from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"  where the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!" appears, referring to the white EVA pods.

No, just kidding. Wink

Serenity could possibly be right, but if the 'i' in 'iPod' is simply a continuation from the 'iMac' brand (where Apple first used the 'i' prefix), it means 'internet'. This is due to the iMac being the first Mac that was "internet ready", or at least made it easy for the general public to use the internet, which at the time was still something the public wasn't hugely aware of.

Of course, that doesn't really apply to the iPod (unless you count the new iPod Touch), but Apple felt the marketing for the iMac was so strong that they would continue it. Hence why it is in many of their products.

Will the original iPod fade completely away? Now with the nano, phone and the touch it seems that way. I hope they don't completely go away. I just hope they come down in price a little more.
