except of gujarat and some holy places, you can find alcohol just about anywhere. In my experience Himachal Pradesh is a beat short in beer.
India brews all sorts of beverages of all sorts of quality. Now most popular foreign brands are available in the metros.
prices of a medium size whiskey bottle varies between 150 to 800 rupees. Royal Challenge whiskey is considered as a good brand and costs around 500 Rs.
Indian beer is available in 2 types normal & extra strong. Price varies from 30 to 50 rupees for 750mL. Cans cost about 30 rupees. Kingfisher, Haywords, Black label are popular brands.
A variety of Indian wines are available from poor to excellent quality. Sula, Grover are good wineries. They make both sparkling & still whites & various types of reds.

All the prices I mentioned are the usual prices in Delhi, though they can change in other states.

I have to disagree with Sanjeev- Indian wine is practically undrinkable,goes for the Royal challenge whiskey as well, feels like cement in the throat.

If you are coming down south (States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa), there is a wealth of choice.

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, is the pub capital of India. There are also hundreds of bars where the ambience and service could be below par for foreigners.

Chennai, where I live, is a nightmare. There aren't many bars and most of them charge pretty high rates (not much actually, if you are paying in dollars). But 100 miles from Chennai is Pondicherry, sweet heaven for all liquor lovers. You get high quality stuff at dirt cheap rates. There are bars everywhere; I mean, literally everywhere. Goa, of course, is another booze paradise. Phew! Gotta go get a drink.
