This seems like it would be illegal

Hi, this isn't about a huge amount of money, but it seems so unfair I have to ask. My son saved his money to buy a $99 iphone from best buy. when the total showed $140, he did not have enough money. We did not know that they charged tax on the original price of $499, not the upgrade price of $99. Can they really do that.

I know it seems illegal and you can thank the government regulators for it, but it has something to do with the telecommunications industry.

Depending on your state, for example I know that a California vendor has to charge tax on the retail price if the discounted price is more than a certain percentage. Texas has a simlar law.

If you think they cheated you, you should contact your state taxation authority to verify if it is the law.
