Personal prevention is one thing and such instances of identity theft happening offline have also increased. There are a number of identity audit systems available these days and a number of identity access management firms that provide services to save data stored in laptops from theft or misuse. When one can spend hundreds of dollars in buying a laptop, it would not cost much to install security features that would help protect invaluable data.

The ways in which you can avoid identity theft are as follows:

a) Shred all the documents containning personal information which is no longer in use.

b) Avoid lending credit cards & pin numbers to your friends

c) Avoid mail or telephone solicitations that are disguised as promotions

Better late than never

What should you do about identity theft? You don't really need to wait to for your creditors to call you up and inform you about fraudulent charges on your account. You should always keep yourself updated on all your credit accounts. Many credit card companies offer a service called credit watch and they will alert you every time a new account or inquiry is placed against your credit report.

It is very difficult to prevent identity theft.  You have to be alert and cautious all the time.  You can take the following measures to try to prevent it:

• Secure key business and personal records in a safe place.
• Never carry your social security card and more than one credit card with you.
• Be careful about your paid bills. Never allow them to remain in the mailbox.
• Pay attention while conversing on the phone.  You never know who is listening.
• Check your credit reports and bank statements at regular intervals.
