There is a volume control that could be turned down or muted. Or your speakers could be turned off or unplugged. There is also an AOL setting under Multimedia that can turn off AOL sounds.

Please be sure that its not mute go through control panel and just check there and may be problem of sound card.if there is not a problem of mute than sure that it will be problem of your sound card for your repair laptop .

I suspect you are hearing an AOL Buddy Sound when someone you know comes on line. You can turn off Buddy Sounds at Settings, Sounds, IM under Buddy Arrival and Departure Sounds.
