You could call it spam. Probably "phishing", trying to get you to go to a fake AOL web site and enter your password.

One thing that may help is to sign off AOL, then use Mail, Mail Settings, Manage Saved Mail, Compact. Another thing you can do is to delete some of the mail; the more mail you have, the longer it takes to load. You don't need to keep the daily joke, or the invitation to a time-share presentation.
