do you know the reason for the cough?for instance, there is a condition called heaves.you can do research online to find info on that.its possible your horse has asthma or allergies.try a safe box fan in the stall window .make sure your horse does have good access to fresh air.try different bedding.maybe wetting it down or switching to rubber shreddings.i would recomend a vet have a look incase of infection or illness.identify the reason, and you should be able to find a treatment.good luck.
So how is your Horse?
If the temperature is over 101.5 get a VET.
All immune shots given ? Eating its feed , CLEAN hay , off of the ground ?
Does your horse's EYE's run with fluid and is it clear or yellow ?
Nose runny , clear or yellowish ?
Ask your Vet to drain his sinus / eye area / thru the tear ducts inside the nose with simple saline solution..........Fresh air , clean and dry home for your horse .
How old is your horse?
Yes it is great to be able to treat your own horse , and I agree with your two other posters, contact your VET, this is how YOU LEARN........
Best to you and your Horse!
There are many reasons this could be occurring and it would be best to not just treat the symtom (the cough) but to find the problem and get it corrected. If you want you can probably get a nebulizer and that will help with the cough - clear up the lungs. This will probably be best however, coming from your vet (better safe than sorry).
