They don't. The primary purpose is to give you more than two plugs from an outlet, and more important, to protect any equipment you have plugged into the outlet from power surges that could burn them out.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then that makes me a burning truck filled with TNT hurtling through a rocket fuel depot.

Power strips can save elecricity by totaly disconnecting an appliance from the main power supply. Most appliances draw whats called sub current from an outlet, even when the item is not in use. The sub current keeps the appliance supplied with power at a low level. A power strip can shut that off completely and save a small amount of power, but that does add up over a period of time.
