what you olant depends on where you live. Easily grown plowers that bloom in summer are petunias, impatience and begonias, petunias supply a wide range of colors, impatience come in white, shades of pink, red, salmon as well as purple and lighter and darker shades of the colors I mentioned. Perennials can be had in 8 to 10 inch or larger containers...I find peonies, lillies( of which there are many types) Iris, and Shasta Daisies and Margarites to be dependable and easy to grow perennials...also Hostas are very popular mostly for their interesting forms and foliage types....

I'm looking at the Keyser WV area.....Rhododendrons, azaleas and other acid loving shrubs will bloom great in your area...(Upper South)Lilacs also like the climate there...Perennials also flower famously in your area.   Your area has the shortest summers and longest winters in the region.....so   go with flowers woth shortest tome from planting to flowering ....any reputable nursery or garden center will be invaluable in suggesting things that do well in your area.......get your hands dirty and have fun......
