You can use it to put a collection such as blue bottles.  Or you can choose a theme such as Tea. You could get a vintage Tea tin and a pretty cup and saucer.  Choose a theme that is personal to you.

Occasional tables are usually used as end tables near a sofa or chair.  I would put a small bouquet of fresh flowers and a pretty coaster and a small book of poems there.  Or, an ashtray, and cigarette lighter, Or...a dish of candy or nuts or healthy snacks...you get the idea.  To me, an occasional table should not be overloaded with decorative items, but with things that you or your guests will pick up and use, or look at and admire.
