This experiment is a great craft for toddlers and children. Picky eaters might also be more inclined to eat colorful food. Adults can even use this quirky medium to make a colorful masterpiece! See Image

Steps

  1. See ImageMeasure the teaspoon of water in a sandwich baggie.
  2. See ImageCarefully drop the food coloring into the water.
  3. See ImageAdd the rice or pasta into the baggie.
  4. See ImageZip the bag up or tie it securely. Shake and "mush" the rice or pasta into the food coloring water. Make sure that everything gets mixed in.
  5. See ImageShake it on a wax paper lined baking sheet. You may use a paper plate instead of a baking sheet. Spread the rice/pasta around to avoid clumps.
  6. See ImageLet the mixture dry for 30 minutes before using.

Tips

  • Create a variety of rice or pasta colors, such as yellow, orange, and red. Place the piles in different bowls, draw pictures with glue on paper and sprinkle the colored rice or pasta on the glue. Let the glue dry slightly and shake off the remaining pasta or rice grains. Let the picture completely dry.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup uncooked white rice or macaroni pasta
  • 4 to 6 drops of food coloring, will need more for yellow pasta
  • Wax paper
  • Baking sheet or paper plate
  • 1 teaspoon of water
  • Sandwich baggies
