Does 'The Help' Romanticize Racism?

The movie, about black maids in the Jim Crow South and the white woman who writes a book about them, is set to clean up at the Oscars on Sunday night, with actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer both favored to take home awards. But "The Help" has caused controversy almost from the moment it was released, setting off an intense dialogue about its portrayal of race and racism.

What do YOU think about racial interactions then and now?

Is that how you leftists sell the Black Panthers?  We all knew you were leftist so you are a racist too but your insults are so stupid they could only have come from Hitler.  That is as far to the left as you can go, genocidal fraud!

I wonder if there is a less intelligent form of life than brainless leftists?

I didn't see the movie, but I did read the book.  I also lived that life at that time, and the book was not anything like the life my family lived.  Yes, The Help, the book, romanticized racism.  There was not one scene in the book I could relate to. I can't believe the author ever lived that life that way, or even knew anyone who did.  All fluff and no substance.  Entertaining to many I'm sure, but not to southerners white or black.  That's my opinion.

Only if they use Snap-On tools.

Keep close to Nature's heart... climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.* Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.*One of the widest gaps in human experience is the gap between what we say we want to be and our willingness to discipline ourselves to get there.

I don't care what kinda' tools ya use, crashing into th' wall in the third turn just ain't romantic!

Of course this book and movie romanticized racism, the same as Uncle Tom's Cabin and Gone With The Wind romanticized the South.  But, most people had rather have a romanticized version of history than see that we all are in the same identical boat, much of the time.  That would take a tolerance of mind that most of us do not enjoy.

Hollywood romanticizes everything and just loves to tell the world they know what you think, feel, and need.  Racism is not a romantic issue, not then and not now and never has been.  People who protest fictional art because of the symbolism they attach to it are morons and those who don't know the difference or significance of the stance they take need a great deal more education than they have.

"the black is indolent and fanciful, he spends his money on frivolity and drink [...]" - Che Guevara

Won't see that on the t-shirts. And that's fairly tame compared to the rest of the diatribe.

To add:

"We believe as much in the purity of race as we think they do, only we believe that they would best serve these interests, which are as dear to us as to them, by advocating the purity of all races, and not one alone. We believe also that the white race of South Africa should be the predominating race." - Gandhi

Additional Details

Loans: I'll speak on Gandhi's quote. Most of his racist statements can be found in his Indian Opinion magazine. Basically, in his quest to gain rights for Indians, he threw the black Africans under the bus. He would regularly refer to them as kaffirs and described their lifestyle as disgusting.

Che's racist statements are mostly found in his diaries. Search the one I posted and you'll find a number of sources.

HI EVERYONE JUST CAME BACK ON 9/24/12 just checking in on whats new nothing?

People are making too much of a big deal about it. We all know things were very racist back then. And now the book and movie comes out about it, and people get all funny about it. It was a great movie. And a good lesson.

Racism has to be the least pertinent excuse to approve or condemn another person that exists.
