Heating an air

The thermostat for my  in home furnace will reach 70 degrees and it's set to 75 degrees then it stops.  When it stops the furnace does too. I am an electrician and understand how they work together but heating/air is not my specialty. Would you immediatly replace t-stat or is it possible there is a furnace problem. Also to get the t-stat back on you have to shut it off for a minute or so the turn it back on and and it will run adjusting the house temperature a couple of degrees higher then shut off again.

This may not be a thermostat problem.  In the furnace is a least one sensor for the fan controls that can shut everything down, and you may have other devices that can shut the furnace down, too.  The best thing would be to get a furnace repair manual from the library (or online) and together with the schematic that came with your furnace (somewhere inside one of the removeable panels) you might be able to pinpoint your problem.

If your thermostat is programmable it may be the cause, but it's not my first suspect.
