Well my grandpa has them and until I was 12 I thought that he was unique! , but these spots are called Liver spots (They have no connection to the liver!)

They usually occur in sun-exposed areas of our body and they are a product to prolonged (because of age) exposure to sun or other forms of ultraviolet light, or other unknown causes.

They are very common after the age of 40 with the highest occurrence rate on the back of the hands, the shoulder, and some part of the face.

They are harmless and painless, but they are looking nasty - so as the song says - USE SUNSCREEN!

Dark spots, on areas previously exposed to sun are also misleadingly called, , lever spots (nothing to do with the lever). They are caused by ultraviolet light and the mechanism is unknown by now. Spots are usually age related, and appear more on people that were exposed to the sun.

These spots are basically an accumulation of lipofuscin in different areas of the body. This pigment is a residue of processes occurring in the body during life. The oxidation of different fats causes them to get the yellowish, brown color we all know as the spots on old peoples hands and body. This isn't a pathological phenomenon. It's simply life taking its course.
