I would like to learn how to meditate. What technique could I use to help me if when I try to meditate I can't quiet my mind? Is there a focal point I can use?
The trick is to get to quiet your mind. Focus first on your breathing -- four counts in with the belly expanding, and six counts out with the belly flattening. Then choose a mantra, a word or sound or phrase (i.e. peace, quiet, happiness) that you will repeat over and over again while you continue to breathe slowly. If you find that your mind is wandering, don't despair. Simply refocus your attention on your breathing and the mantra and continue from there. Plan to spend at least 10-15 minutes at a time to do this, and if you can get in multiple sessions per day, that's even better. Remember, peace, quiet, focus. You'll find it very calming.
