Lack of stress, regular working hours, sleeping hours and bed times, nutritious food and exercise too are important factors that prolong life. Yet long life is merely not a matter of physical health but also your mental health. New research suggests that people with certain temperaments live longer. And you can successfully change your personality to attain that particular temperament.

Optimism pays

To be an optimist you have to have a positive outlook towards life. New research suggests that optimists have more stable cardiovascular systems and have more responsive immune systems. Also, they have a less of a hormonal response to stress as compared to the pessimists

This is best answered by an old saying I first read while I was a teenager working my first full time summer job;

"The optimist see the opportunity in every difficulty while the pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity".

Another way of stating this; are you easily overwhelmed by your responsibilities (this can be school, work, marriage and etc.) or do you accept the challange in doing all you need, to be successful in these opportunities. The mental aspect, sometimes called attitude, can determine the quality of your life, so I encourage the optomistic approach.

"I've heard you're a low down yankee liar!"

Optimism has many benefits for everyone.  However, it can also be used as a weapon against others.  Nobody is wrong for not being optimistic.  It does not help to invalidate another's emotional experience.  Emotions cannot be changed. Attitudes towards emotions, however, can be changed.  If I am not afraid to feel what I am feeling, or if I am not invalidated for my feelings or experience then I begin to have a more optimistic viewpoint; the more I am validated by others who love and accept me, the more optimistic I become.

Recovery and Peace from all depression and trauma is possible.
