I always had knee trouble since I was younger and someone studying to be a personal trainer told me it could be because of weak hips. Does hip strength directly affect knee strength?

It is possible because the human skeleton is constructed with a great deal of engineering principles. If one element lacks strengthit can affect other elements. You should see an orthopedist.

The hip and knee share the femur bone.  The hip has a tremendous amount of muscle mass in the hip that should be controling where your femur is in space.  Most importantly, rotation of the femur can have a significant impact on knee pain because if the femur rotates toward the midline too far, it can create a situation where there is excessive stress on the kneecap.  At Acceleration Physical Therapy in Spokane, WA, we like to say that the hip bone is the knee bone, and the hip must be the knee's best friend!

Most pain meds do NOT contain steroids. Why you can't find them is strange. Are you in some 3rd world country? If you're in the USA or Canada or any other developed country, pain meds are readily available without steroids. To name a few: Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone.
