I am interested in the topic of health insurance ...

I am interested in the topic of health insurance companies denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. I understand this applies only to individual policies and not to group policies. I would like to know if the insurance industry or anyone else knows approximately how much more it would cost if all people with pre-existing conditions were covered?

Group health insurance through employment does cover pre-existing conditions.

I think the biggest problem with pre-existing for just anyone is people gaming the system and not just the cost to cover.  People can cruise along opting to not buy insurance and save their money, then they come down with something and immediately go out and pick up coverage after finding out they have cancer.  WHo wouldn't do this?  So they require you change jobs or get a job with a plan (which often have a waiting period to verify you're really there for the job vs. getting a procedure done) to cut down on this.

Think about it... it's a rock and a hard place and not a one sided arguement.  There's no perfect health system on this planet, they all have their problems to be worked out.

Not all group health plans cover pre-existing conditions. In my familys case we have always carried the best inssurance our employer offered. How ever after losing his job and not being able to afford the Cobra plan we had a 90 day lapse of insurance. So even though we signed up with his new employers insurance (Which is the same company we have had for 10yrs prior to him losing his job) our family is not covered for 1 year on any"pre-existing" conditions. To give an example of how stupid this is... My 6 year old son had an ear infection in Jan. we were still in the company waiting period and were with out insurance. I paid the $85.00 Dr bill and $45.00 for RX., no big deal. At the end of March when we are covered, my son develops a mass in his neck. We go to Peditrician, he recomends going to an Ear Nose and Throat Specialis. We go see him. He sends us for an ultrasound to see if mass is a cyst, or tumor, or what. Insurance has denied all these charges saying it is pre-ex cause he saw a Dr. in Jan. for an ear infection. Nothing to do with each other, just went to the same Dr. as most people would do.

Well there are health insurance polocies out there that do cover all pre existing conditions and they are almost twice as much as plans that we call medically underwritten which means you can be turned down. Now dont think just because you have a pre existing you will be turned down for individual health insurance this is not true. The insurance company is willing to take on many risks.
