The discs in the spine are like a tire only filed with fluid instead of air. In order to remain inflated the spine has to bend and twist to suck fluid from the bone above and below. Inactivity therefore allows discs to lose fluid and bulge out like a tire with low pressure. The best exercise for pain is done while the spine is not under a load. Pilates exercises on a ball are very effective for this.
