Is it possible to buy a new interior/exterior door and hang it in place of the exisiting door - with out having to change the door casing

You do to want to use an interior door for an exterior one.

It's usually not a good idea as the hinge mortises are very unlikey to match up. Hanging a new door in an old jamb sometimes isn't the way to go. Try a prehung door unit.
