Hair disaster.

So I decided to switch from light blonde box color to professional highlights and lowlights. The first girl I went to turned the lowlights orange. (also cut it crooked) I did not go back to her because she left town on vaca. I went to another salon and the girl put a dark brown in for lowlights and the 'shadow.' WAY TOO DARK! I walked out with the dark brown shadow, middle bleach blonde and the top looked like it was in four sections ...2 of each color. I go to another salon, and yes, explain what happened...she uses 2 shades of bleach and a lowlight. This time it was a full head foil. The current problem, the top looks great, but 6 inches from the top and my long hair gets very ashy looking. I have no more money. I don't want to go back to professionals that have already screwed up my hair. My hair is not fried or brittle. Just really ashy. Is there any cheaper way to fix this?

Jenn,  I would forget about the highlights and low lights for now.  Stick with one straight color, as you have already had too many chemicals put on your hair.  Go buy a box of Revlon Color Silk in light brown.  Use one ounce developer, one ounce color, and one ounce shampoo.  Mix it all up and color your hair as usual.  You use the shampoo with it to sort of water down everything, because as I said, you already have had too many chemicals on your hair in a short period of time.  Leave this mixture on for about 15 minutes, no longer.  This should give you a color you can live with for a month to 6 weeks, and give your hair a break from chemicals.  I believe your hair looks ashy from too much too soon.  Give your hair a rest, or it may all turn pure black and no matter what you put on it, it won't hold a color until all your hair grows out.  Your hair is your crowning glory, so take good care of it.
