My hair has been coming out, I feel like I'm on ...

My hair has been coming out, I feel like I'm on chemo. When I wash my hair I end up with a pile of hair. I can just run my hands over my hair and several strands come out. I've been coloring my hair for approximately 15 years, I use Clairol nice n easy, they've change the formula or something, it's blended. I asked my beautician if this could have caused this she said no; she says I'm too stressed. HELP!

Make an appointment with your doctor, express your concerns, and undergo blood tests to see if there is an underlying issue, which may be causing your rapid hair loss. You may have a thyroid condition, lupus or an auto-immune disease, including alopecia, which causes a person to lose all of his hair. If your hair suddenly starts falling out, it could be an indication that you are suffering from an as yet undetected underlying illness.

  • Step 2
Determine if you are getting the proper vitamins and minerals in your diet. If you are anemic (ironic deficient) this can cause your hair to fall out. If you do not have the right amount of Vitamin B (B5 B6 B12 Biotin) in your system, this too can promote hair loss. Tests can be done to determine if you are anemic and deficient in other areas. An individual needs copper, zinc and magnesium in his diet to maintain healthy, non-shedding hair. Fish oil supplements can provide essential fatty acids that are crucial for healthy hair. A protein rich diet is needed because hair needs protein to thrive. Vitamins C, E and A are also important for healthy hair.

  • Step 3
Consider what medications you are taking. Your hair loss may be caused by your medicine. Those that can result in hair loss include contraceptives, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, gout medicine, acne medicine and chemotherapy drugs.

  • Step 4
Alter your hair style. If you are pulling your hair back into a tight bun or pony tail you are causing stress on your hair, which may result in it falling out. If you are over-bleaching, over-perming or over-processing, this is going to take its toll on your hair. Extensions can be stressful on hair.

  • Step 5
Consider what is going on in your life. Are you dealing with stress? Are you remotely getting enough sleep and is it sound sleep? Are you post-partum or menopausal? Did you recently have surgery or suffer from some trauma? If any of these are the reason for your hair loss, the loss shouldn't be permanent but you need to address these issues and seek medical help or assistance from an alternative medicine practitioner so that you can stop the hair loss in its tracks.

Stress will make your hair fall out. My two daughters lost their dad 2 years ago and the stress is making their hair fall out. A beautician told them to use more conditioner after shampooing, and a leave in conditioner. It has helped some. Try it and hopefully it will work for you. Plus, if you can eliminate some of the stress you may be under that WILL help a lot.

It could be stress. It could also be your diet.

And yes, it could also be the chemicals you are using on your hair. Not everyone's hair will react in that way, but yours may be doing so.

If you feel that nothing's changed so as to be a cause of your hair loss (stress, poor diet, illness, etcetera) then I would agree with you in your suspicions of the product causing the problem.

Try changing brands and see if that helps.

(I don't color my hair, but I have found that some brands of shampoo and conditioner cause my hair to break and/or fall out - it is only by process of elimination that you will discover what works for you. Good luck.)

Diabetes also causes hair loss. I KNOW lol.

It may not be that your hair is falling out but that is is breaking at differrnt lenghts. If this is the case you will automatically assume that your hair is "falling" out, when in reality it is merely breaking off. Next time this happens examine your hair strands that have came out and look for root foliciles. if there are no roots attached to the strands then it stands to reason that your hair has grown weak over time and is merely breaking off.

Vicki, stress can make your hair fall out.  Do you have a lot of stress in your life?  Hair color, especially over time, can certainly damage hair and cause alopecia.  Menopause can also cause hair to fall out.  One thing for sure, your hair shouldn't be falling out, no matter how old or young you are.  Please go to your doctor and get an exam at the earliest possible time.  The sooner you discover the problem, the more likely you will be able to reverse the condition.
