Okay, I get that I should have planted my grass seed in Fall but it's almost Spring in Ohio and I've got a muddy mess in my back yard. With three dogs and two kids our back yard is definitely a high traffic area so I have two questions... #1. What is the best kind of grass to get for our highly used yard (we are in West Central Ohio) that is partly shaded and #2. What should I keep in mind when planting this in Spring which seems to be the less optimal time to plant?

Spring is a fine time to plant grass seed.  Buy a full shade type, you'll get the best results.  Get a high traffic type, too.  Mix them together before you plant.  Plant early and reseed every week or two until late May.
