Grants are usually for projects, not people. What are you using the grant for? School? Ask at your financial aid office. They should point you to places that they have worked successfully with before. Is it to start a business? Take your business plan to your supporting SCORE Office and see if they might be able to point you into a useful direction. If it's for a philanthropic endeavor you're interested  in; find the nearest Foundation Center - Core Collection Best of luck!

There certainly are free grants for this type of situation, but as the first responder basically said, it's a little tricky to find them. Buying the book that the #1 answered suggested would be a good idea. It looks like it has great information in it!
