Because he's a nice guy?

Hay. You think I'm crazy? You should hear the voices in my head. Those people have issues.

Wrongful conviction of a felony crime that lands an innocent person behind bars is a horror that sometimes takes place even in America.  When it does occur, the person who has been wrongly convicted has specific legal rights, that begin with pardon, expungement of one's record, counseling, treatment of diseases contracted while in custody, and further settlement that the board deems proper.

California has a three-person compensation board that determines what to do and how to do it.  The Board is as sovereign as the Judge that handed down a wrongful conviction (and can hold the Judge accountable).

Settlement amounts vary case to case but usually a "fair baseline rate" is about $90.00/day while in custody on a wrongful conviction.

Reversal of a conviction is not the same as appeal.  Appeals consider technicalities of the trial, propriety of evidence introduced, accuracy of testimony presented, etc.  The process is hideously complex but necessary.

Reversal means that the Judge's finding was in error and that an innocent person has suffered for a crime that they did not commit.

Awards of vehicles and other compensation are fully consistent with the law.
