It depends on what karat gold and who's buying/selling it.  There is no universal price for precious metals in the retail world.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Some jewelry is done with intricate artistry and craftsmanship.  Beautiful artistry in jewelry makes it worth more than just the gold by itself.  Just like art is worth more than the oil paint and canvas.

Can't tell unless I know what the gold is in Karats. Thr percentage of actual gold varies too widely from 22K to 10K.

I may not be Mr. Know It All, but I knew him well and he taught me much.

What carat is the ring? 10kt, 14kt, 18kt or etc? the price is more as the carats go up.

So skipping the obvious - number of grams of gold... it's still only worth what someone will pay... One oz of gold is 31.1034768 grams, or one gram is .311034768 hundreths of one oz....

Now lets assume your ring is 22K - of your 4.7 grams, 3.8194 grams are gold ~ or 1.1879661928992 hundreths of oz. At todays price (we'll assume $1500/oz ~ or $48.23/gram; varying daily with the market), the GROSS value of your gold is $184. HOWEVER, people that buy gold for melting down are NOT paying GROSS values... they pay anywhere from 22% (rip-offs) to 85% of spot (price, fair). Realistically, a 22K gold ring of 4.7 grams - with no diamonds, artistry, etc. should fetch around $180 for the gold content.

A 14K gold ring of 4.7 grams should fetch around $113 from someone buying the ring for gold value.
