In the Makhtesh Ramon there are a few small, black hills. They seem to be composed of loose, black rocks (I haven't been able to view them from up close). Do you know what these are?

Hi Dag

I think that you mean those 5 or 6 dark hills you can see from the merginals of Makhtesh Ramon. They are composed of QUARTZITE - sandstone consisting of quartz grains cemented by secondary silica. To see the formation - enter:

Thanks very much; that answered my question. I understand there is also volcanic basalt in Makhtesh Ramon, but I am not sure where it is. Is that true? I was only able to look at it from the visitor center area at Mitzpe Ramon and not do down into the depression, so what I saw was no doubt the Quartzite hills you mention.

Yes. There are few volcanos mountains in the Makhtesh. Two of them are MT.METZAKH in the eastern part. and AROD MT. in the western part.  A large area of igneous rocks exist in the southern part.
