General Contractor Selection Criteria

I live in a community where "Professionals" are required to REGISTER, annually, with the Building Department. How does one determine/engage an appropriate General Contractor? What are the Pertinent Questions to ask in this process?

NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) should have a local association for your county who you can contact to find reputable contractors. Builders should be insured and bonded. They should be willing to give you names/contacts of previous clients and/or get referrals from friends/acquaintances. Thoroughly investigate their references. Beware of contractors who give you a price without knowing the details of your project ie: quality of materials, scope of project, etc. Get everything in writing: quality of materials, time frame, how to handle changes that are inevitable in home remodeling that incur extra costs. Ask how much of the work you can do yourself. "Raising the Rafters" by Stephen F. Collier is a book that may help you come up with questions. I'm sure there are other similar books.
