My Swiss Chard plants appear to have got beet leaf ...

My Swiss Chard plants appear to have got beet leaf miner according to your problem page. How can I avoid this re-occuring next year? The plants are in Levington in tubs. A tub with new compost this year is less affected than 3 with old compost, the plants in these are very stunted. Thank you for any help.

Hi John,

Beet leaf miner is a small whitish maggots feed between the leaf surfaces. Damage appears as winding trails in leaf tissue. As mines enlarge, they may merge and from large, light-colored blotched areas. Feeding lasts 1 to 3 weeks. They may pupate in the leaf or in the soil and 1/4" long, gray, flies emerge in 2 to 4 weeks.

To control beet leaf miner, remove and dispose all infested leaves. Floating row covers or cover crops planted in between plants may screen out the fly. Control host weeds like lambs quarter to reduce local populations.
