Disconnect the opener from the rail and make sure the door operates freely and isn't binding. If it doesn't bind and closes ok then it's the opener. Most openers have an adjustment on the unit to adjust the up and down force. Could be it just needs a little more force to move it down. The safety device used to be the reverse mechanism you are experiencing, now they have sensors too. Make sure you check the operation of the door before you adjust the down force.
