One of the most overlooked part about learning the guitar is fret board logic.  In my opinion, this is one of the first thing you should learn.  Try to do too much, learn to crawl, walk, then run.  You can play many simple song with a few basic chords, and a notes on the first couple of strings.  This will give you a sense of success and gratification. Then build on that base.  Some excellent beginners books are Hal Leanard, Guitar books 1,2,3.  They build starting string by sting an add a little each time.  There are CD's to go along with them so you can hear what you are trying to play.  As far as quickly, this is dependant on the amount of time you invest and your passion for the guitar.  Natural ability is great, but passion for the instrument is better.  Don't play the guitar because you would love to be a star, become a star because you love to play the guitar.

Hi Lydia.

Learning to play guitar is a lifelong thing. As long as you keep playing and trying new things you'll keep learning.

It takes time to learn how to play guitar, don't believe the sales hype that tells you you can learn in a day, a week, or even a month.

There are many things that you need to do correctly at the same time when you play a stringed instrument, such as pressing the correct string down, in the correct spot, behind the correct fret while plucking the same string at just the right time etc.

All this will fell very awkward and unnatural to any beginner, but with consistent practice everything will become automatic.

The fastest way to learn however (and it will still take time) is by following good quality step by step lessons and not jumping from one exercise, lesson, or website to another.

I have reviewed some good guitar lesson resources on my website here: http:/www.introductiontoguitar.com/best-guitar-lessons.html

Hi,
There are tons of free websites giving out tutorials but as far as I have seen none of them give you exactly what you need. Free only means one thing !, get your attention and sell you something later.

I have stacks of free tutorials at home which are collecting dust because they were just no good.

My daughter just started learning and I have been showing her some stuff, I have been playing for 20 years + but I can't teach to save my life.
I bought "Team Method Guitar" 6 weeks ago for her and she is coming on great with it.

It's HUGH, It has the most extensive tutorials I have ever seen.

Some of her class at school have also bought it and I have just emailed them yesterday to ask for a discount if all her music class buy it.

By the way I only play rhythm but have been learning some lead from my daughters team method dvd's,

Have a look at Team Method Guitar here http://bit.ly/9U2W6D

Guitarist for 20 years + and still loving it...

1. First learn how to read tablature.

2. Then learn how to read guitar chord charts

3. Grab a guitar chord resource like a book.

4. Learn basic strumming including alternate strumming

5. Find some basic exercises for picking

6. Grab a beginner's song book if you need to

7. Try to learn some easy guitar licks for future lead playing

8. Take the time to memorize the notes on the guitar

9. After you've taken the time to do some of these things, then try to learn a scale position every now and then and try your best to memorize the pattern (visually) and perhaps the notes.

The best way to learn how to play the guitar quickly is through an online multimedia guitar course. It's the cheapest, fastest, and easiest way to develop technique, your ear, and chops. But, there are many great  advantages here as well.

Many people today learn quicker through video/audio training, but with a combination of that and online tools, including downloadable ebooks, the learning curve is dramatically decreased.

Nowadays, more and more girls are learning to play the guitar - so whether you are a male or female, online training can be fun and develop your skills faster than an offline teacher when starting out.

Should i learn to play the accoustic or the electric guitar first?

Most guitarists ten to learn on acoustic or classical (nylon string) guitar, simply because electric guitar can be quite hard on fingers, especially if a child. Don't forget that with an electric guitar you'll need an amplifier, found here: http://www.camdensounds.co.uk/amplifiers.html

I was playing the acoustic guitar for a long time ...

Electric guitar requires a lot finer touch on the cords because even the slightest contact will produce sound. That is why you'll need even better motorics to master the playing.
