Get one with a viewfinder or rechargeable batteries. Those with and LCD only will eat you alive to keep it in batteries.

I would get one with a decent mount of zoom, at least 5X. Pick one up in Target and look thru it. Push the zoom.

Get one with a good lens- Nikon, Leica, Canon. There are certainly others.

What are you going to be doing with it? If you are going to be doing a lot of close up shots, how easy is it to put it in a close up mode.

I recently bot a cheap Nikon. I can very quickly change exposure compensation, go to close up mode, set the flash, and turn on the self timer.

Honestly, nobody can answer this question but yourself. There is no CORRECT answer. I hope that this info proves useful to you.

Keep close to Nature's heart... climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.* Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.*One of the widest gaps in human experience is the gap between what we say we want to be and our willingness to discipline ourselves to get there.

Lydia,

If you can give us a budget and what you want to accomplish with the camera, you would get better answers. Example: I have $500 and would like to take photos of kids/pets, or I have $2,000 and am taking a trip to Alaska. This will narrow down the scope of the question and help you with a better result. Good Luck,

 Rich

I just bought a nikon d90, pic. are awesome  on auto, but the more you play with settings on manual the better it gets. like the 18-200 lens... but little heavy. just depends on how long you carry it. that setup is a little expensive, but does a good job in most situations

Hello.. You can try to read some reviews about these 3 cameras.. They are very great cameras...

Sony Alpha 290 (a290)

Nikon D3000

Canon 1000D (Rebel XS)

Hope this helps,

Allen
