A lot of times the state will creamate.....When my Mother passed we were all in different states and did not have the money for flights, caskets and burials....so my brother went to the Human Resources Dept. in Michigan. I know this is a rough time and I am sorry for you and your family ...but creamation and a nice wake ...is a way to go...if resources are limited

Steve, I do not know the area but basics are all the same. Every funeral home is REQUIRED to give a written casket price list and general price list - you may request these before a death and compare prices. Talking to neighbors, clergy and friends is also advised, try to get feedback from these people as to professionalism, fairness and how service is overall at different funeral homes. If you are cremating and not having a service prior to cremation - use the least expensive. Normally the "discount" cremation facilities are associated with a full price funeral home.
(Example - One city of 900,000 people - direct cremation was priced from $475.00 to 2500.00)

Burial is a bit different but the same Federal regulations apply as to price lists MUST be discussed prior to making arrangements. ALWAYS ask questions - NEVER assume that any thing is required. If you do not receive adequate answers, ask for a manager. I worked more than 25 years in three states as a funeral director/embalmer/manager - I saw families get "ripped-off" by a couple of bad directors, most are honest and up-front. The most important thing is to ASK QUESTIONS - DO NOT ASSUME - Anything.

Do not get ripped off when there is a death in your family

Cremation has become more and more acceptable in the last 10 years, mainly due to cost.  Some GEEDY Funeral Homes will not even honor life insurance policies as payment.  COLD CASH,  That is there "policy".  I live in Florida NE of the Bradenton area.  Most areas are elite. They will take every penny you are willing to pay. They thrive on your grief.  I went through a suicide of my spouse; and $18,000. for him to look like himself!

His Soul was with his Creator.  Social Security pays a paultry sum of $255. for burial. Many people do not even believe or carry life insurance anymore.

He was cremated, an urn purchased and later his ashes scattered in a special place we had once held sacred & full of memories.  Friends gathered and spoke - it was the best choice for me.  My cost -  $55.00.

Caskets, bones, flesh and the body are gone! Let it go.  Pray your loved one is in the Arms of His Creator and His Soul is fulfilled,

"Deny me in front of my Father and I shall deny you."

A frivilious show!   Funerals.
