There is no shortage of things to do in that area, so it depends on your tastes.
Here is some info that may help you sort it all out.
A combination of Early American heritage and modern flair, Alexandria boasts an eclectic choice of activities - whether you wish to walk in the footsteps of history, spend a refreshing day outdoors, or have a girlfriends' spa day getaway!
Visit several sites highlighting the city's role in the American Revolution and the Civil War. Enjoy quiet reflection in Christ Church, where George Washington and Robert E. Lee worshipped. Savor a glass of wine and gourmet cuisine at Gadsby's Tavern where the founding fathers socialized and Thomas Jefferson celebrated his presidential inaugural.
Hop on and off the free King Street Trolley to explore Old Town. Set sail on a romantic dinner cruise along the Potomac River or take the Water Taxi to nearby National Harbor - home of the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. I think youngsters of your age would be more interested in having fun than learning too much history about a destination. Here are a few things that you should not miss out:
1. Cruises on the Potomac River, horse drawn carriage rides, ghost tours, and historic walking tours.
2. Bike the scenic Mount Vernon Trail
3. Attend a concert atBirchmere Music Hall. It is errific concert venue with 500 seats offering a good view from every seat in the house.
4. The City of Alexandria has numerous parks and recreational facilities providing opportunities to enjoy hiking, picnicking, swimming, bicycling or boating.
5. Attend a Festival or Special Event. Alexandria hosts a lot of wonderful events throughout the year including parades, art and music festivals, holiday events and much more.
