my question is why does my cat not drink from the bowl, but only drinks from the toilet? He has to knock over the bowl all day long spilling water on the carpet.

Cats often go for what they think is fresh water, and as you can see sometimes they are just wrong :-P

Maybe the smell of chlorine or fluoride or other chemicals that are added to the water disturbs your cat, and the smell is less obvious in the toilet. Try to make sure you replace the water regularly once a day, and that they are clean and clear.

If you can bear it, use the same bowl and don't rinse it, even if it becomes moldy. I know it sounds disgusting but it could be what your cat might look for to feel the water are good enough to drink. On a personal note I can tell you that I once gave my cat mineral water (there was a problem with the pipes) and she wouldn't touch it.

One last thing - if the cat knocks over the bowl, consider moving the bowl, even to a higher surface.

Did she always do this or did it just start? If she always did it then I guess maybe it's a habit she picked up somehow. I think it's ok if she eats and drinks and uses her litter box like she's supposed to but if it worries you, maybe you could ask your vet?

If the cat has not been to the vet for a spell, get it checked. Then, get a grooming comb and go to work. If the cat acts like it is going to turn on you or climbs to the top of the chimney, just cut them out next time y'all are together on a friendly basis.
