Well I have never heard of this problem before, perhaps it would be a good idea for your friend, if it is possible, to consult a different doctor in order to get a second opinion... If a second doctor will have the same opinion I am sure it will put your friend at ease, but if there is some sort of treatment your friend should be getting perhaps he or she needs to hear about this

This is quite common - the condition is called cough syncope (which is really just a posh way of saying fainting when you cough)

Cough syncope is one trigger for so called vasovagal syncope.

People with vasovagal syncope typically have recurrent episodes, usually when exposed to a specific trigger. The initial episode often occurs when the person is a teenager, then recurs in clusters throughout his or her life. Prior to losing consciousness, the individual frequently experiences a prodrome of symptoms such as lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, ringing in the ears, and visual disturbances. These last for at least a few seconds before consciousness is lost, which typically happens when the person is sitting up or standing. When they pass out, they fall down; and when in this position, effective blood flow to the brain is immediately restored, allowing the person to wake up.

Hi Kelsey,

My father is even suffering from the same cause.Previoulsy it was diagnosed by the Doctors that there is an accumulation of cough in his lungs so whenever he does couging he was fainting. So the doctors gave him adequate medicine to melt the cough and clear his lungs. He was fine for about a month and a half and 10 days back at night he got cough and he fainted again.

He regained consiousness later but the root of the problem is not well known to the doctors. My father is at home and i am away from my country so it is real hard for me to do anything from here but i am very much worried.Everybody told me that he is all fine now but i just want to know the root of the problem and how this can be solved forever. My father is 63 Yrs old.

Please help me i will wwait for your reply.

Thanks or your post it was very informative and releiving also.

My husband is 34 years old and was admitted into the hospital last night.  I didn't know what more to do.  so i had no choice but to bring him in.  he keeps coughing and have fainting episodes.  how long will this last? i'm scared for him.  they've given him 4 breathing treatments and they think it could be pneumonia.  i brought up the thought of maybe cough syncope.  they thought it could be that too.  they aren't sure.  i don't know what to do i'm going insane just waiting!!!!!!!

Hi Jesssica,

I have posted here before also regarding my father. He has been to many test but nothing was found even he was said to be having Cough Syncope and i am sure it is cough Syncope with bronchitis/pneumonia.

There may be cough deposited.Just Inform him not to cough rigorously and avoid that because this is the main cause of getting fainted. As i understood there is a discontinuity of the blood flow from heart to brain in the process of coughing there is a vein which gets clogged.

Get his heart Lung and brain test done.you can get to know more about it if there is anything which is facing problem.I hope all are fine with your husband it looks like my father's case.

My father is non alcoholic and non smoker all his life.I read it somewhere that these people are more prone to this attack.

just make sure he should not cough rigorously and at the meantime if there is a cough Deposited please take a doctor advise and some medication to get that dissolve.

I am not Doctor by profession .So please do not take every word i said here please seek assistance from professionals.

My analysis is all based on my specific study to this disease and my experience to this disease.

I know how it feels but dont worry everything is going to be all fine.

Take care

my husband is 53 yrs. old and he coughs untill he passes out. It's like he can't get any air in when he coughs and as a result he passes out. The episodes happen 5 or more times a day. The doctors gave him cough medicine for the cough but he still coughs, and he has seen a heart specialist and that turned out ok. He is now fixing to see a neurologist to rule out seizures. This just started happening about 2 months ago. He has more injuries due to him falling to the floor when he faints, its starting to scare me. I don't know what to do.

Hi There, My Dad is going thru the same thing; very sick this past week, coughing with severe loss of breath, fainting and loss of consciuosness. He fell off the bed two nites ago & fainted, my mom rushed him to the ER; they did tests & said-NOTHING after all kinds of tests & 4 hours in the waiting room!!!! But, light bronchitis; they gave him cough meds & an antibiotic, he went home after a few hours, insisted on going to work...had a cough episode, lost consciousness & got into a terrible accident in which he totalled his car-But thankfully was ok. I phoned the nurse Director @ ST JUDE IN FULERTON, gave her a piece of my mind asking how someone is sent home after a fainting spell/possible seizure-SHE WAS NONCHALANT!!! Dad is stubborn and wont go to the ER this evening, has an appt with his promary care physician on MONDAY. Please tell me the outcome-THE DIAGNOSIS after you get it PLEEEEZZZZ., or call me 714-878-2595. Thanks, Julie

Hi Agnee, So, what was the outcome after all the heart, brain and lung test were done??? Thanks, Julie

Is 'croup cough' treatable? and what are the best ways to prevent or aid

Yes, croup cough is treatable. One of the best ways is to take the child out in the cold night air. You can also take them into a steamy bathroom or shower and clap on their back. Both of these methods are recommended by Dr. Sears. During the day, try some of these cough home remedies .
