Dave,

 Piriformis syndrome is one of the major causes of lower back pain and pain into the lower leg.   The sciatic nerve runs under the piriformis muscle or it can pierce through it.  When you piriformis muscle tightens, it will cause pressure on sciatic nerve which will cause pain into the lower leg and into the foot.  I hope this helps answer your question.
