I have caught fish while it was raining.  It was also about 9pm in the dark.  So I tried it again the next night, no rain and no fish.

I think they were just biting that night.

A few details now that you got me started....it was in south Louisiana on a private lake with a hugh pier.  We had been boiling crawfish and decided to keep a bucket of live crawfish for bait.

We rigged it like a plastic worm with a bullet sinker on the front and embedded the hook just beneath the shell, making it weedless. The Largemouth Bass went crazy!  About every other cast, we would pull one in.  And it was raining. That's the only reason I was fishing in the rain, because they were biting.

I think it makes a difference how hard it's raining, also.  I've had great action fishing for pike, trout, and panfish during a light rain.  I've never had much luck at all fishing in a hard, driving downpour.  And yes, when I was a bit younger, I would fish during a hard rain, at least for a little while.

If I can't always dazzle 'em with brilliance, I'll try baffling 'em with BS. Band of None

An umbrella should be the first lure in your tackle box.

Fish are not affected at all by the rain. The rain drops hit the surface of the water and pop up a million little drops, but it does little or nothing below the surface. The water would change temperature minutely only if there was a huge rainfall. Some small bugs may be knocked out of the air by the rain so there may be a little natural food waiting for them, which might make floating some bait close to the surface a good idea. So, bottom line, if you don't mind fishing in the rain, the fish will be there waiting for you. I'd have to say some of our best fishing happened during a rain over the last 50 years.

I may not be Mr. Know It All, but I knew him well and he taught me much.

I CAN DO BETTER ! Fish ARE affected by the rain. Not so much the rain but the barometric pressure that comes with it. All fish have whats called a "center line." This line runs from head to tail, basically the spine of the fish. This area of the fish is extremely sensitive to its surroundings. EXAMPLE- a hurt or distressed bait fish will be felt by other fish's center lines. this helps the fish hone in on the distressed bait fish. The fish will more than likely feel these vibrations before they see the meal. SAME FOR PRESSURE FRONTS! When a storm moves in, the barometric pressure affects their center lines, often sparking a feeding frenzy before and after the storm hits.

If your reel is new, or almost new, you probably need new line. As braided line is used, the coating wears away, and friction between the line and the bail increases. When that happens, the line may not glide over the bail to fully seat on the roller. This is only my opinion, I think monofilament ...
