I can do better, it sounds like your "little rod" for your daughter, is probably the typical starter combo for young children. push button reel, maybe 3 to 5 feet of pole? EITHER WAY HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT ! From my experience, if you cast and your line constantly gets tangled, then you probably have a lot of twist in the line.  #1 Take an egg shaped sinker that has the little built in swivel at the top, tie it on and cast. The more you cast the sinker, the more twist you can take out. The swivel allows the line to untwist, as you reel the line back in. #2 If line falls off the reel, you have too much line on the reel. This happens a lot with open faced spinning reels that have too much line. It just un-spools itself when the bail is open. ANOTHER HELPFUL TIP: When casting in windy conditions, often times the wind will "catch" your line and whip it everywhere BUT the place you want it. Instead of a straight line from you to your bait, you end up with a big curved line from you to the bait. Get a small squeeze bottle and fill it up with dish soap and water. Just a couple of drops of soap per 2 ounces or so....a little dab will do ya. Each time you cast, squirt the line with the soapy water mixture - this will cause your line to fall faster, limiting the time the wind has to catch it.
