My Firefox 3 bookmarks toolbar disappeared suddenly. It vanished from my browser window, and when I tried to bring in back by right-clicking on the toolbars' area and re-checking the "bookmark toolbar" it came back empty. I tried dragging-and-dropping links to the empty toolbar, but It's not working. I checked the bookmarks library (using the "organize bookmarks" option in the "bookmarks' menu, and it showed me that the bookmarks toolbar is in place, with all the links I put there existing.
What can I do to solve the problem (besides trying to re-install Firefox)?
Right click the file toolbar and choose customize. Click on new toolbar and name it and then drag the bookmarks icon onto it. All my toolbar bookmarks showed up then. Hope that helps.

I am having the same problem - only I don't have a "blank" toolbar - I just don't have one anymore. I did read on another site that if you customize the bookmark toolbar and look for the little purple book icon that says "bookmarks" and drop it into your empty blank toolbar, you should see your bookmarks again. I did not try this myself, but I do not have a blank toolbar - I just don't have a bookmark toolbar at all.
Hope this helps. By the way, I am using 3.0.5 Beta.
This worked for me:
Right click in toolbar area
Make sure that boomarks toolbar is selected
Select customize
Drag bookmarks icon to empty boomarks toolbar
Click done
