Fireflies only live 2-3 weeks long in general, just enough time to mate and lay eggs. I know their are a few species of fireflies that don't even have light to begin with, but those that do, it is caused by a chemical reaction in their bodies. I am assuming that those who do have light, need it to live their short life.
